چکیده

Conditional probability distributions seem to have a bad reputation when it comes to rigorous treatment of conditioning. Technical arguments are published as manipulations of Radon-Nikodym derivatives, although we all secretly perform heuristic calculations using elementary deenitions of conditional probabilities. In print, measurability and averaging properties substitute for intuitive ideas about random variables behaving like constants given particular conditioning information. One way to engage in rigorous, guilt-free manipulation of conditional distributions is to treat them as disintegrating measures|families of probability measures concentrating on the level sets of a conditioning statistic. In this paper we make a case for disintegration as a desirable part of the education of every graduate student of probability and statistics. We present a little theory and a range of examples|from EM algorithms and the Neyman factorization, through Bayes theory and marginalization paradoxes, to martin-gales adapted to Brownian ltrations|to suggest that disintegrations have both intuitive appeal and the rigor needed for many problems in mathematical statistics.

Statistical Process Adjustment: a brief retrospective, current status, and some opportunities for further work

Industrial Statisticians frequently face problems in their practice where adjustment of a manufacturing process is necessary. In this paper, a view of the origins and recent work in the area of Statistical Process Adjustment (SPA) is provided. A discussion of some topics open for further research is also given including new problems in semiconductor manufacturing process control. The goal of th...

SDE - A program package for the simulation, optimal filtering and maximum likelihood estimation of nonlinear Stochastic Differential Equations

Continuous time models with sampled data possess several advantages over conventional time series and panel models (special issue 62:1, 2008, of Statistica Neerlandica). For example, data with unequal time intervals can be treated efficiently, since the dynamic model parameters of the system model are not affected by the measurement process. In the linear case, the nonlinear parameter restricti...

A Spatial-Dependence Continuous-Time Model for Regional Unemployment Change in Germany

This paper analyzes patterns of regional labour market development in Germany over the period 2000-2003 by means of a spatial-dependence continuous-time model. (Spatial) panel data are routinely modelled in discrete time. However, there are compelling arguments for continuous time modelling of (spatial) panel data. Particularly, most social processes evolve in continuous time such that analysis...
